Damage Softball was founded originally in
the fall of 1993 by Gregg Johnson & Kevin S. Nasta. The team took
the field for the first time in the spring of 1994 in the Just For
Kicks Softball League. The team consisted of a group of friends and
family of both Johnson & Nasta. The team's name originated from the
term "What's The Damage?" The term was used during Nasta and
Johnson's days of playing stickball in Todt Hill Park. It was a
unique way of asking what the score was when you were waiting to
play on the field next.....Nasta explained. Together they
decided the team would be called Damage Inc. so it would sound like
a sponsored team but it was their own created name.
The team took shape in the spring of 1994
and took the field in the summer winning its first contest 13-1. The
team was lethal and could not be matched by the other teams in the
league. Damage was named league champions that summer of 94.
In 1995 Damage Inc. joined the Richmond
County Softball League and continued their dominance by posting a
28-0 regular season. It marked the first time that a team in the
RCSL posted a un-defeated season. Damage then went on to post a
perfect 6-0 post season record and winning the league's
championship. To this day Damage is the only team in Richmond County
League history
to go wire to wire un-defeated in a single season.
The team took on many changes in players and
in the coaching ranks in 1996, as Nasta took over the reigns of
Damage softball. Nasta led Damage to a league championship in 1998
and then added to the team name to Damage Inc. Sports in 2000. In
2003 Damage went on to win the RCSL league championship again.
Damage went on to play in the finals again in 2001, 2004, and 2009 but
came up short, giving them a 4-3 finals series record.
The team's trademark logo has gone through
numerous changes in 1994, 1995, 2000, and 2008. In 2000 the Damage
logo took on a third color (red) adding to its already noticeable
look. In 2004, the fall 2006, and 2007 Damage co-sponsored teams
with Frito Lay (01), Jody's Club Forest (05), Erika Leigh's Tavern (F06), Sharkey's Sports Bar & Grill (07),
dannyboy's Tavern (09).
In 2008 Damage took another change by
changing its name to Damage Athletics and altering the jersey to red
as the main color with white and black print. The team is a division
of Damage Athletics Nasta LLC.™(©1994-2010).
Damage softball is
one of the most recognized names in Staten Island. Its look and
reputation is well guarded.
